To add to our valuable team of dedicated employees, Umicore Autocat USA Inc is currently seeking a Product System and Design- Gasoline Engineer in our Automotive Catalysts business unit, located at our Auburn Hills, MI facility.

What You Will Be Doing

Technical Responsibility (70%):

 

  • Guide the technical discussions at the customers jointly with the responsible Regional Director in Customer Support.
  • Manage generic product and system development programs in close cooperation with the Customer Support Team and AC-Research & Technology.
  • Effective communication of customer and competitor information and status within AC-PM.
  • Characterize advanced vehicle Powertrain technologies and engine control strategies using OBD diagnostic tools and automotive oscilloscopes.
  • Provide technical support for a) component and system modelling; b) sample recommendations (technology and sizing), and c) presentations.
  • Balanced jointly with Regional Director, manages priorities of experimental projects and adjust as appropriately to meet the needs of various internal and external customer objectives.
  • Manage internal projects focused on reduction in test variability and improvement of data quality.
  • Provide technical perspective to support strategic planning associated with markets
  • Ensure that the work performed in his/her area of responsibility meets the requirements of the IATF16949, ISO14001-2015, OHSAS18001, quality assurance system and promotes the continued application of the TQM process within his/her team.
  • Assurance of IP protection, supported by the R&D group
  • Generate IP and long term technical competitiveness.

 

Commercial and Strategic Responsibility (30%):

 

  • Based on market requirements and future powertrain technology developments the position supports the Regional Director in developing long-term global technology strategy and priorities.
  • Provide recommendation for the optimization of the productivity and efficiency of the test programs (budget used vs. potential size of business).
  • Customer interface with the technical community to position Umicore and to gain insight into their current and future product and emission system needs and planning. This includes a clear understanding of their development and testing requirements (engine as well as chassis).
  • Improve Umicore’s technology image through active participation (incl. presentations) in industry and government meetings as well as scientific and technical events.
  • Run technical competitive analysis of competitor products and system design and give feedback to the organization.
  • Understand the technology aspects necessary to satisfy the newly formed legislation throughout the globe as each country has different emission requirements that are continuously evolving.
  • The function is responsible to plan with its supervisor to reach a sustainable target

Who We Are Looking For

Education & Technical Background

  • Education- B.S. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Science.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • 2 years minimum experience in research and/or development of catalysts, relevant experience in emissions and/or calibration fields. 2-3 years’ experience in automotive industry preferred.
  • Fluent English language skills are required.
  • Excellent Organizational, Prioritization and Project Management Skills
  • Computer programming experience, VBA  and/or Diadem preferred

Behavioral Competencies

  • Excellent analytical capabilities; problem solving skills; teamwork; program/project coordination. Enjoys data mining and data analysis.
  • Computer literacy with demonstrated knowledge of Windows Operating System (Windows 7/10); Excel; Microsoft Word; PowerPoint; and Access.
  • Possess demonstrated and proven customer support skills.
  • Hands-on experience with development and testing of emission control systems; and/or experience with engine calibration to meet regulated emissions.  Familiarity with vehicle emissions test hardware set-ups and sensors (i.e. UEGO)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to develop effective internal and external presentations.
  • Self-driven person with demonstrated ability to work well in a team. Must be able to guide selection of catalyst technologies to help meet customers’ needs and generate ideas, strategies and conclusions to support customers with minimal supervision.
  • Keep abreast of new technologies through personal readings; training seminars; and participation in public conferences and meetings (i.e. SAE, MECA etc.)
  • Regional / global knowledge of automotive industry practices (tiered supply chain, for example)
  • Culturally sensitive
